You are teaching first grade, and through “kidwatching” you have discovered that Anthony has a limited vocabulary. When talking with you, he does not use specific terms for many objects (e.g,. he uses juice for orange juice, lemonade, and fruit-based sodas), and he appears not to understand you when you use specific words for terms. For example, while on a nature walk, he did not know what the root of a plant was or the trunk of a tree. Explain at least four different activities you would use to increase his listening and speaking vocabulary. Answer Selected Answer: I would do some different things to help my student with his vocabulary. I might use a wordless book and go through it and point out things in the book and tell him what they are while figuring out the story. Then I would have him go through the story and dictate it to me. Another day I would do a listening walk. On the listening walk I would have my student be very quiet and just listen to what he hears. I would point out in detail what we hear. Another activity Anthony and any student that needs to develop their vocabulary more could do is a science experiment. Doing one like planting a lima bean in a clear cup is great because the students can see it and take notes everyday. I would use terms like soil instead of dirt and seed instead of bean. This way my students are exposed to richer vocabulary. I might also do a schoolyard safari with my students. We could walk around the school and look for evidence of the changing season. Students could take notes and make a book or journal. The students could practice using adjectives to describe things they see. Correct Answer: [None]
